This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Kindergarteners are curious hands-on learners. They need repetition and lots of practice to master foundational skills like sorting, patterning, counting, and number computation. Utilizing materials that students can hold, move, and manipulate helps them to solve complex word problems.

Your donation to this project will give students the opportunity to count objects and use a variety of tools to sort, organize, order numbers, and solve word problems so they can build number sense--a building block for all mathematical concepts that will follow.

The beads, stickers, and dots in this project will help students build an understanding of sorting, patterning, number order, greater than, less than, and equal to, one-to-one correspondence, cardinality - knowing the last number stated when counting represents the total stable order, conservation - knowing the total number does not change if the collection is counted in a different way, subtilizing -to identify the number of things in a set simply by quickly looking at them, not by counting them one by one - estimating, skip counting, and flexible thinking. Additionally, students will use these tools to help them solve both addition and subtraction problems.

The labels in this project list will give students additional challenges to the word problems we are solving. Students will use the lacing string to create bead patterns and the art trays to contain their small pieces in one area so they can count and manipulate objects easily.
