I currently am a Behavior Support teacher for students grades nine through 12 with emotional disturbances, autism, spectrum disorders, and other social and emotional disturbances. The isolation of COVID-19 was very detrimental to my students as they were not able to practice and learn the social emotional skills that they needed. When school resumed, these students were lacking SEL skills resulting in students that become overwhelmed, anxious, and stressed very easily in my classroom. My goal is to achieve a quiet corner where students can take brain breaks from stimuli in classrooms. Additionally many of my students come to school hungry lacking affordable food options. To alleviate this I have asked for a number of snack items to provide them something on their stomach so they can at least focus for the time being on their education. Over 75% of my students are in the foster care system, 50% have been in residential treatment, and a third incarcerated.
