Solo Time Activities for Introspection and Calm in the Classroom

Help me give my students painting sets, zen workbooks, and calming decor for my students for SOLO time. Students have ~20 minutes daily of peaceful silent time. Science shows our brains need silence for introspection in our days.

My Project

Maria Montessori said “Silence often brings us the knowledge which we had not fully realized, that we possess within ourselves an interior life." In Montessori schools, students should have 20-30 minutes daily in SOLO time to be silent and introspective in order to help them get closer to feeling and understanding that interior life.

The philosophy is based on science that our brains need silence in order to process and thrive, yet we don't get enough of it in our modern, busy world.

Therefore, we carve out 20 minutes minimum daily for students to have purposeful silence. During that time, they can do a variety of activities such as drawing, painting, creative writing, caring for plants, doing puzzles, reading books of their choice, meditating, or just resting their brains. The items in this Donors Choose project have been selected to give students a variety of choices- ones that are appealing and exciting- to get them to buy into SOLO time early in the school year and quickly see the benefits of silence and solitude in the middle of a busy school day.
