My Students
My inquisitive, creative and energetic students love STEAM projects. They love engaging projects to move them to a deeper understanding of important concepts. Our school is a small rural k-8 school of 440 students, and the only school in the Conway School District, WA. As the 7-8 Science Teacher, I am consistently hunting for engaging and authentic projects for our students. We pride ourselves in preparing students to excel at the High School level in one of the 3 surrounding school districts.
My Project
While attending a STEM training at the US Naval Academy last summer I learned how to solder electronic components to a board for a simple flashing light kit. The feeling of accomplishment was awesome and empowering. The Naval Academy Instructors at this activity emphatically told us, "We really need to teach soldering to Middle School students. It just doesn't seem to happen very much and it is becoming a lost skill." This kit offers more components than other kits and student engagement should be phenomenal.
I knew right then when that little red light started flashing on my soldered circuit board, I wanted to create this same opportunity for my students to experience the empowerment and thrill of gaining a valuable skill.
My students have created circuits and built small solar cars and now they are ready for an experience they will never forget. Soldering resistors, jumpers, LEDs, volume control, battery connections, and speakers will be their crowning achievement and open the doors for more electronics and robotics in the future.
