My Project
My students LOVE learning! They are fully engaged when learning about science and they enjoy any explorations or experiments we do to help them construct meaning.
We will build solar ovens as a culmination to our solar study unit.
Students will integrate what they have learned about the movement of the sun (or the Earth's rotation) and the energy produced by the sun to build a solar oven. The students will be able to heat up s'mores in their oven, and then modify their design to see if it works better with changes.
There are several items students will use to construct their ovens- small pizza boxes, plastic wrap, aluminum foil and card stock.
Students can change the color of paper, angle their lids differently, or wrap their ovens in reflective aluminum foil. They will also have mini thermometers to collect data on the actual temperatures inside their ovens.
Students will also end the year by making ice cream. They have been learning about the different phases of matter (including the plasm if the sun). They will continue their study of phase changes with homemade ice cream. The students will place milk and sugar in the Ziplock bag. Then they will double bag it in a larger bag surrounded by ice and salt and see how the lowered temperature will initiate a phase change.
These highly motivating and exciting science experiments help to provide critical, foundational knowledge and experiences that the students will carry with them into higher learning.
