My Students

My students are wonderful creative people that despite their situation have a positive attitude in life. The majority live in poverty and qualify for free lunches. For many they have set the ambitious goal of being the first member of their family to attend college. It is a lofty goal that I love :)

Living in an urban environment, sustainability and renewable energies are typically foreign concepts to my students.

However, science is an engaging subject that my students love. I believe it is important to expose my young charges to the potential of STEM. For example, two years ago, I was able to provide them with a science enrichment day at Cornell University. It was amazing to see my students working in world class laboratories. They loved it, and I believe it inspired some to pursue their interest in science. However, without the technology and supplies in my classroom, I fear that I cannot give them the best opportunities.

My Project

This project is inspired by the S.O.S.! (Solar Offers Sustainability):Teach for the Planet project. My students will explore renewable energies and delve deep into the understanding of solar power. They will then work collaboratively in teams to design and create solar projects that will be entered in our 1st Annual Solar Energy Competition! This will be an integrated curriculum that will combine literacy skills, science, and engineering into a unit of study. Additionally, they must design, write, and give valid reasons as to why their competition entry is the best. Lessons are rigorous with higher-order thinking skills. We need energy conscious citizens for the future and this unit is a huge step for my young charges in that direction.

Preparing American students for an increasingly global and competitive workforce is an important task.

This project aligns with that goal because we teach critical thinking as well the importance of being environmentally conscious of our natural energy sources. Please help me inspire my students to begin a lifelong habit of being kind to our planet. I want to make a difference in their lives for years to come. We need to align with our natural forces and create sustainability for Earth.
