Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach Social Studies in a Title I New York City Public School. I have students of all different backgrounds that come to my school to not only get a "traditional" education but also a career and technical education as we are the only CTE school in the area. Although my students come from all over the island and even some from other boros, the majority of my students come from low income homes and often help to care for their younger siblings putting their own needs and wants aside. My students are very accepting of each other offering to translate for our large ENL population in class so that they can make sure that their classmates fully understand what is going on in class. They support their peers with disabilities to help them with new activities and more difficult subject matter. I am proud of my school and my students as we are truly a family.
My Project
Two years ago my "Google goes Global" project was funded and I was able to get 5 laptops to use in my classroom to incorporate research projects. My co-teacher was also fortunate enough to have her project funded as well and we were able to provide our class with ten new laptops. We have been using a locked cart that our school converted into charging cart for us. While this cart has been helpful it is also difficult to move around from room to room and it is not easy to keep the laptops from moving around inside and the chargers from becoming tangled.
We are asking for help to keep our laptops safe and secure so that our students can effectively use these devices that were generously donated for years to come.
