This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school consists of over 700 students in preschool through fifth grade. Almost 90% of our population is considered low income and qualifies for free lunch. Our school represents a wide range of cultures.
My students are newcomers from another country and struggling readers that come to the learning center on a daily basis to receive extra support in language development and reading.
Although they struggle to read independently, they enjoy read-alouds and shared readings where they are able to engage in rich discussions that lead towards making connection, partner sharing, retelling stories or sharing newly learned knowledge with their peers through different collaborative groupings.
My Project
This school year my students came up with an amazing idea. Their idea was to have a softball game against the teachers at the end of the school year. Many of them don't know how to play softball. So they ask me to write this project to Target. My students will not only have the opportunity to be introduced to the game of softball, but most importantly, they will be able to play the game safely. Students may benefit from the game of softball in a number of ways including: Conditioning, strength, flexibility, improving self-esteem, learning teamwork, and the development of leadership skills.
They will learn the skills involved, positions, rules of the game, etc.
It is very difficult and unsafe to participate in a game of softball without gloves and we currently do not have enough gloves. Therefore, having balls, bats and gloves will provide my students the opportunity to learn a different sport correctly and to stay safe while involved.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
