Help overcome teenage obesity and lethargy in South Los Angeles! I'm an English teacher and athletic director in a very successful small public high school with an inadequate physical education program and no budget for sports.
In a community in which more young people go to prison than college it is natural to deprioritize physical education in favor of academics. But a sports program done the right way is a part of a good education -- one that educates the whole person.
Our school district and state do not provide basic funds for athletics. It is assumed that revenue from vending machines, a student store, and ticket sales from football and basketball games will cover those expenses. Unfortunately, our small school has none of those revenue sources and so we must scrape and beg or ask students (many of whom live below the poverty line) and coaches to fund athletics.
We have, for some years, maintained a jerry-built softball team with hand-me-downs and coach-bought uniforms and equipment. We are in need of some official bats and a good supply of softballs. We are starting a track and field team this year and have nothing other than the enthusiasm and commitment of the athletes. Our coaches are teachers who understand that competitive sports are just another way to educate students and that they often provide the kind of authentic teaching opportunities not always easy to come by in the classroom. Your generous donations will help kids learn teamwork and camaraderie and excellence pursuing victory with honor -- and, perhaps most important -- they will discover how to run TO something (a goal, a dream, a finish line) not just run FROM something (poverty, ignorance, a bullet).
