My Project
My AVID middle school scholars are developing their confidence, critical thinking, and communication skills. They thrive in structured, respectful discussions that require preparation and reflection.
I’m creating a designated Socratic Seminar Circle in my classroom—complete with cozy seating, discussion tools, and engagement prompts.
Students will prepare with texts and guiding questions, then practice academic discourse using a talking object (“speaking stone”) and a timer to manage turns. The goal is to replicate college-style discussions in a safe, scaffolded environment, reinforcing WICOR strategies (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading).
Students build crucial skills: deep reading, analytical thinking, respectful speaking/listening, and peer feedback. These seminars promote equity—every voice is heard, every opinion is valued.
