I teach math at an amazing Head-start through fifth-grade elementary school, located in Miami Gardens. For the upcoming school year, I am assigned as the school's math coach. I am also the school's basketball coach, so I wear many hats.
We are a Title I institution and more than 90 percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch.
Our students are very energetic and ready to learn new things. Despite the social-economic challenges they face and diverse needs, they always rise to the occasion and try to meet or exceed the goals set for them.
My Project
Our basketball team has been together for a few years. We are an elementary basketball team and we don't receive funding for our team. We play in different city leagues and we are currently on pace to make it to the championship for our current league.
Many of our players come from households that are on income restrictions.
Our players often come to the games with dirty, holey, and different colored socks. When we play against teams that are from affluent neighborhoods, our players feel intimidated and somewhat embarrassed because of this. We are trying to build unity and teamwork with our players both on and off the court. There is an old saying that goes by "If you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you play good." We want our players to feel comfortable and confident every time that they step on the court. Your donation of the socks will help build our teams confidence and contribute to our success.
