My Students
My students are a great group of students who are filled with a lot of energy. My students are a mixture of Brooklyn natives and recent immigrants to the country. While my students come from diverse backgrounds there are many commonalities that bring them together. Many of my students are interested in the creative arts and photography. Enabling them to learn the art of photography will allow students to become more active in their school community. In our photography class we always keep SEL, socio emotional learning in mind at all times. Photography is a useful tool to allow students to build self-awareness, build social awareness and develop better relationships with peers, their home and school community.
My Project
Building socio-emotional skills has been proven to be useful in life skill development to allow students to succeed in the future. SEL skills begin with self awareness which leads to better relationship skills and social awareness. Having awareness of themselves and their community leads to self management and better decision making over all.
Photography is a useful bridge that allows students to develop strong self awareness and through photography critique students gain better relationship skills and social awareness.
Photography is a new elective course that we have opened up in our school which has truly allowed me to build my curriculum around all of the SEL components. Providing my students with cameras will further their development of artistic expression along with developing life long SEL skills. Allowing my students to have access to the cameras will allow my students the tools to use photography for self expression and build self awareness. Through student art work critique in the classroom students are able to verbally express their thinking, emotions and make connections to their student community. As a class photography is used directly as a platform and tool for students to to explore the CASEL components of SEL and bridge positive change within themselves, classroom, schools and communities.
