This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I serve Gifted and Talented students in a highly diverse, low-income district. The students come from many different backgrounds and a majority of our students speak a second language. Our students come from supportive families who want the best for their kids but often do not have the resources they need to assist them. These students are focused and excited to learn.

Gifted students are tomorrow's leaders, inventors, problem-solvers and creators!

Providing them with opportunities to think critically and collaborate is essential for their success while providing them more opportunities to be more college and career ready!

My Project

The LEGO Foundation is partnering with the social learning platform, FutureLearn, to deliver a new course designed to help teachers, parents and educational systems provide social-emotional learning (SEL) support to children aged 0-16 affected by COVID-19 disruption. The LEGO Foundation has developed the free online course, Coping with Changes: Social-Emotional Learning Through Play, to help primary caregivers and teachers build their capacity to respond to uncertain situations, and boost children’s socio-emotional wellbeing by learning through play.

The free LEGO course for educators covers the practical and emotional challenges facing children today, the foundations of learning through play, helpful stress management strategies, the importance of SEL in a crisis, and age-sensitive SEL knowledge and activities utilizing the lego baseplates and pieces requested.

The course will also cover potential long-term effects of crises on a child’s wellbeing and cognitive development, and how to best aid children in coping with changes and transitions.

I am beginning the course now to be better equipped to build upon LEGO Foundation’s five characteristics of learning through play (meaningful, joyful, socially interactive, actively engaging, and iterative). LEGO will provide me with active LEGO activities that aim to elicit joy, be actively engaging, provide interaction (with other learners and/or the course), provide iterative learning, and be meaningful for my students' lives. The program immediately provides me with adolescent LEGO activities and practical tools that can be used immediately. I am excited to add this LEGO SEL station to my classroom and begin utilizing the lesson plans and strategies they provide to meet my students SEL needs through LEGO plan.... all I need are the LEGO supplies.
