My Students
I am a New York City public school educator. I am a part of a district which is a cohort of many schools across our city and has the highest amount of special needs students. Our district is specifically designed to educate students with disabilities. My students have Autism and multiple disabilities. They are also economically disadvantaged.
Our district works a 12-month program, so it is essential to have appropriate educational materials and curriculum to support them and meet their individualized learning needs.
I teach students with disabilities, and 100% of my students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. Students often come to us with many struggles from home. I want their education to be fun and exciting. In District 75 many of our students are medically fragile and cannot always attend school in person. Full remote learning at this moment is their only option, which can be difficult due to their disabilities.
My students are some of the most disadvantaged students in New York. I want to ensure that we can meet their needs and encourage their learning. My students deserve an education just like students who can attend school in person during this pandemic!
My Project
Currently, my students are stuck in their homes. They have been since March. Unlike other students in New York City, their families do not have a choice but to keep them home to learn. My students suffer from multiple disabilities and many of them are medically fragile. They cannot go out and play like other children and take the bus every day to school to learn. I want to ensure the materials I have for my students will meet all of their needs especially socially and emotionally. There are not a plethora of digital resources available for my students on these topics that could help them. Books and videos are great ways to engage my students. It is time-consuming making everything to meet the various needs of my students. By using these materials, it gives me more time to concentrate on my students as well as support them in these difficult and confusing times.
By using videos to model yoga and mindfulness for students in the morning will help start the day off right and stories will help us build on these essential skills, check in with our students and build understanding.
We need to properly support students.
Stories and manipulatives are so powerful in supporting students. All of these materials will help address needs that have not been supported throughout this pandemic. Our students should be able to express themselves and understand how they feel. They should also be able to find ways to relax, unwind and enjoy their education. Thank you for all of your help supporting my students this year!
