I teach first grade in a new dual language program in Brooklyn. My students need a collection of Spanish books that support the themes for our social studies curriculum. Our dual language program is just two years old and we are still building up our classroom library.
I have 25 first graders who love to read in English and Spanish.
In our school, 57% of the students receive free or reduced price meals. My students come from very diverse backgrounds. They love learning about the world around them and enjoy participating in literacy activities.
My Project
In first grade, we have a wonderful social studies curriculum. My students will be learning about families now and long ago and families in various communities. We live in a very diverse community, and I am excited about how much my students will bring to your exploration. However, we don't have enough books in Spanish to help support and inspire our exploration on these themes. I want to make sure that literacy is connected to all of our content areas and, in order to do it, I need more Spanish books that talk about families around the world, community workers, and celebrations.
Having these books will support our units of study and teach my first graders to appreciate the world of learning that reading brings.
