My Students
My students are amazing! The 19 smiles, 'good mornings', and fist bumps that greet me each morning motivate me to do everything I can to give my students the finest education possible.
I teach at a rural, Title I School where a large percent of the students receive free or reduced lunch.
Many of the students at our school are part of the backpacks against hunger program and take a backpack of food home over the weekend. Despite the different backgrounds and hardships of my students, they all come eager to learn.
Our classroom is a place where children learn and become leaders.Students come into our classroom quiet and shy, but they learn to be leaders and to never give up. They know the magic word to anything is YET. I don't know it...YET! I don't understand...YET! I can't do this...YET! They keep trying and never give up! When they make a mistake they know to keep trying, and they place their hand over their heart and recite "I’ve got GRIT. I don't quit!
My Project
Our classroom needs nonfiction texts that are up to date and exciting for students to read. My current students devour nonfiction texts, and our current classroom library is less than 1/4 nonfiction with many outdated titles.
Over 50% of students entered my classroom with an independent reading level below grade level.
My goal is to get them all to grade level by the end of the year and much of that is dependent on engaging texts that they enjoy. Nonfiction is also one of the most challenging genres for students to comprehend, and it is also one of the most important. Students have to be able to read informational writing to understand the world around them. Additionally, learning about the past and our government is important for students to grow into well-informed citizens.
Moreover, these books will allow me to group students and create team projects where students will work together to comprehend and discuss nonfiction topics while working on reading strategies. My students will be able to identify text structure, main idea and details, create a summary, and find text evidence. Working with their peers and writing about their new knowledge will lead to many wonderful class discussions and presentations!
These books will help engage my students with their bright illustrations and vivid details. They will not only help my students become better readers, but they will also help them learn about the world past and present!
