Social Stories That Inspire!

Help me give my students a printer and markers so we can incorporate important social skills such as empathy, kindness, forgiveness, and reciprocity. We will use these stories throughout the year to better understand common social situations.

My Students

My classroom is made up of twenty-two boys and girls with various learning disabilities and severe emotional disturbances. My students come to school very eager to learn. They are highly motivated to share their work with others and love presenting to the class. A full one hundred percent of the children are eligible for free breakfast and lunch.

These students have attention deficits, which make traditional paper and pencil writing assignments very difficult.

They have so many wonderful ideas but often find it hard to put those ideas on paper due to their difficulty in maintaining focus. Our kids learn best through varied platforms such as presentations, hands-on manipulatives, and gross motor activities.

In addition to having challenging homes and neighborhood issues, my students have emotional needs and attention deficits that require frequent and varied activity in the classroom.

My Project

Social Stories are used to teach particular social skills, such as identifying important cues in a given situation; taking another's point of view; understanding rules, routines, situations, upcoming events or abstract concepts; and understanding expectations.

Our students struggle with reading social cues, so we will rewrite famous stories with ourselves at the characters!

We will take pictures of ourselves and our peers in order to illustrate our stories.

Using our printer and markers, we will create stories that incorporate important social skills such as empathy, kindness, forgiveness, reciprocity, and problem solving. We will use these stories throughout the year to better understand common social problems that we experience.
