Social Skills Through Game Play

Help me give my students new updated games for our Recreation and Leisure time, games such as Castle Panic will allow students to build their cooperative skills, games such as Shut the Box help build on math skills!

My Students

I am an Autistic Support Special Education Teacher of a public school in Philadelphia, and my students are some of the greatest teenagers that I know. My students require a functional curriculum focused on academics, communication, community, domestic, and vocational skills. This means that my job is to help prepare my students for life outside and after middle school and high school. We work on these needed skills through various ways including but not limited to cooking/baking, doing community-based instruction trips, working closely with other classes, and building skills through hands on materials. Even though my students experience economic struggles and academic barriers, they come to school every day and work their hardest in our room!

Our school is a school that provides 100% free breakfast and lunch just to give you an idea of the poverty level they come from.

Please help me to provide some of the things to assist in building our social skills! With your help I can help my students to thrive within my classroom.

My Project

Everyday we are asked to utilize social skills in order to interact with the world around us. We learn how to work cooperatively with the people we engage with. I will use these games in order to increase our social skills during our Recreation and Leisure times. This will allow me to monitor goals for students on taking turns, working with partners, as well as showing sportsmanship.

Updating our choices of games allows for me to continue to build on student interests and for them to learn more skills such as problem solving and strategy.

Some of these games will require students to work together while others will allow them to compete with each other to build on sportsmanship and regulating coping skills when a game doesn't go the way they were hoping.
