My Students

I have 7 students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills, as well as communication and social skills.

We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.

We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, and group time to work on academic skills and writing. Students have storytime to work on comprehension, math, science, and art where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and follow picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social, and communication skills.

My Project

We started our school year virtual and are getting ready to transition to in person learning. Some of my students will remain virtual while some will be in person so we are getting ready for another change in how we will be learning! One thing we have not been able to work on yet this school year is social skills.

Social skills are very important for kids with autism because it teaches foundational skills that will help to share and take turns.

My students need a lot of modeling and practice to work on these skills. Now that we will have some kids in person I am restructuring our social skills time so my students who are virtual can also participate.

I have been rotating materials to send home to students so they can have hands on activities at home and I am now going to add games and fun activities to that rotation to work on sharing and taking turns. Most of the activities in this project are materials we already have in our classroom so the duplicate copy will be sent home to students. A couple activities we do not have in the classroom but will be great to work on social skills so a copy will stay in the classroom.

While at home, students who are virtual will play the same game as a student in the classroom and they will be able to work on sharing and taking turns since they will each have the same activity. I'm excited to finally be able to work on social skills this school year and am looking forward to seeing growth in my students in this area. With engaging activities, modeling and practice, my students will be able to work on social skills regardless of where they are.
