Do you remember playing with your friends out on the playground? Being excited to go to school to hang out with your friends? Not all students have that experience and have the one wish to have friends and feel accepted. I want to help these student learn the skills to be successful with peers.
I work in a Title One public school in southern California with students from preschool through fifth grade.
The student population is comprised of mainly Caucasian and Latino students. I work with both general education and special education students.
My Project
The books and game I requested will be used in my preschool social skills classes and my elementary social skills boot camp classes. I will be using these books as part of my lessons on empathy, bullying, self-regulation, personal space, emotional regulation, self-acceptance, working within a group and many other topics. The students who participate in my classes frequently demonstrate problematic behaviors due to their difficulty understanding the underlying differences in perception of others. They frequently are not intentionally and willfully missing the cues, stepping outside of the group or having meltdowns to just to be problematic. Rather they do not have skills to support them in ways that facilitate their play-based interactions or help them engage in basic expected social experiences with classmates and adults. My goal is to help teach these students the skills necessary to gain friends and find acceptance within their peer group.
Many children face difficulty with socialization.
This can lead to feelings of isolation, depression and anger. Youth who feel disenfranchised are more likely to turn to gangs, drugs, alcohol, and suicide. By helping me gather the tools needed to teach social skills to my preschool and elementary students, you will be helping me give them the necessary skills to be socially successful. This will reduce the chance of these students engaging in negative, risky behaviors as they grow.
