My Students
My students face the challenges of not being able to easily communicate. Simple tasks of asking for things and completing daily routines are not easy for them. Some need to use pictures to request and comment. Some students become very upset if their schedules are interrupted.
My students are children with special needs.
They have difficulty putting ideas into words, and for some using words. Some of my students are unable to communicate using speech and need to rely on other forms of communication such as gestures, sign language, pictures systems, and for some communication devices.
My Project
It's amazing what technology has been able to do. The iPod Touch can now be used as a communication device by simply downloading an application. Augmentative devices can be very costly. Other communication systems require certain pictures and need more maintenance.
The iPod Touch can provide students access to symbols, schedules, and picture systems in minutes. It is also affordable to families. Some families may already have access to this technology at home. Showing them how to use it would make their lives easier.
My project is so important because communication is important.
If use of this technology can give my students more independence in the classroom and at home, then it will make a difference.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
