My Students

My sweet and goofy 10th graders are inquisitive students who are curious about the world around them. As their ELA teacher, I find myself lucky to guide them as they cultivate a genuine excitement about reading and literature. In class, we ask difficult questions about human nature and fate, grapple with moral dilemmas alongside beloved characters, and learn more about ourselves and our communities through the stories we read.

My students have largely been unable to take advantage of the many cultural experiences Manhattan has to offer, despite having the world's most busy and bustling city right on our doorstep.

Although we are situated in the poorest congressional district in the nation -- in the most segregated school system in America -- my students still deserve to see the city and all it has to offer.

My Project

My 10th graders have historically shown a strong interest in social justice, organizing rallies, starting clubs, writing postcards to senators, and even traveling on a Saturday morning to protest for gun control. I know my students would be captivated by the beautifully-told story of how the Little Rock Nine stood up for change in a divided and unjust world. As students of color, it would be empowering and educational for them to see this important part of American history played out onstage. This play would help them start meaningful conversations about civil rights, school segregation, and the importance of standing up for what you believe in. It would also give many of my students their first access to professional theatre, which has always had the power to change hearts, encourage reflection, and learn about the world.
