This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students love social justice! And they are most fired up about reading when it's about topics that are interesting and relatable them! This variety of books allows students to read a novel about a social justice topic that interests them: racial justice, environmental justice, women's empowerment.

The stories told in these novels, by authors who have lived experiences similar to my students, empower students to tell their own stories and better empathize with the stories of others.

In small groups, students will read the novel centering on the social justice issue of their choice and research the issue at the center of the text and an organization working to combat it. Literature circles culminates with students presenting their topic and organization at an Activists Fair open to the community at the end of the unit.
