Social Justice in Our History Classrooms!

My students need 45 books that improve literacy, while simultaneously serve as resources in our character development program.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember learning about MLK? What about Lincoln? Were you moved by a young girl named Malala? My students are building literacy skills in our reading program, but equally important is building character. During "Social Justice Wednesday" the students learn, grow, and are inspired.

My students are a joy (and challenge) to teach.

While I leave work often exhausted, I feel privileged to teach such wonderful 6th graders. My class sizes are between 28-32 students per class and most of the student population resides in East Los Angeles. My class is truly made up of individuals from all reading levels. In one class we have a student with a 10th grade reading level. Moreover, in the same class I have another student who reads at a 1st grade level. This is what makes this project so vital, both for literacy but character building so students have the fortitude to value education and civic duty. My school is new (2nd year), our teachers and students are building the foundation for all following staff and pupils. This is a challenge, but a truly exciting one. The atmosphere is one of high-expectations, we prepare our students not only for high school, but for higher education. Our enrichment programs promote art, and all staff emphasis the importance of reading.

My Project

These resources will be utilized in several ways. Literacy is a key concern for our student's parents, and our entire staff. Providing access to culturally relevant and interdisciplinary reading materials will promote literacy school-wide. Character building and civic duty are intertwined with History, and these materials reflect our Social Justice program. Furthermore, our students need additional diverse non-fiction texts that speak to them through shared experiences, language, culture, and interests. History can be taught far more effectively through storytelling and student's connecting these stories to their own lives. We want to develop students who engage in history and are active learners. Lastly, through our D.E.A.R. program (drop everything and read), our students will be able to tap into more meaningful texts that can help foster life-long learning and the curiosity that all History classrooms strive to develop. Please help our young students in their journey to success!

1) Literacy Growth 2) Character Education 3) Developing Civic Duty 4) Culturally Relevant Reading Materials Our students live in an environment of both enormous cultural wealth, despite a sharp lack of economic opportunity.

Literacy and character development go hand in hand to mold students that are mentally tough, highly literate, and are civic-minded. Our school is a "College-Ready Academy" and part of our mission is to help students become the change that they want to see.
