This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For most of our students, school offers structure, safety, food, and other things many take for granted. Our incredible school is a Title I school (95% of our students receive free or reduced-cost lunch) with an bilingual population of 95% in a bustling neighborhood. In addition to basic needs, school should offer engaging and meaningful opportunities in learning academics and becoming accepting citizens. Finding the funds and time to gather supplies to create these opportunities can be consuming, but these students deserve it.

These students are truly the brightest, kindest, and most hardworking kids around.

With rich cultural backgrounds, loving and supportive families, and multilingual abilities, they work hard to achieve their academic and interpersonal goals and find success. But these students and their teachers do need help. Any tool or project to keep these students interested and motivated is crucial. Thank you for your time and support!

My Project

Our school is embarking on a challenging and vital mission to create a school culture of social justice, antiracist practices, and equity. The staff at our site began this mission 2 years and have been working on it since. We are ready to bring it into our classrooms.

As a Title 1 school made up of students of color, our school community wants to take the next step of educating our students on social justice practices to foster respect, awareness, and acceptance.

Using literature, we can introduce these topics and create accessibility through media they are comfortable we. The representation in this collection reflect our students, allowing students to feel present in curriculum and teach others about cultures they may not be familiar with. Knowledge is the first step to understanding. While working on our literacy skills, we can conduct collaborative conversations and book talks about the themes of social justice.

Our entire student body is aware of race and culture, but many do not have the background or language to explore topics of racism, classism, and immigration, both documented and undocumented. Books are a great way to access background knowledge and introduce new ideas and vocabulary. The TpT gift card will allow us to find social justice curriculum to support us as we guide our students through this crucial and new curriculum. This journey is intimidating, so having a structured plan to teach our students is needed. As a community of learners, we strive to not only teach academics skills, but the necessary tools and understanding to be skilled in interpersonal relationships and become inclusive global citizens.
