Social-Emotional Well-Being

My Project

One goal for my school this year is to focus on the development of the whole child. An important part of developing the whole child is a focus on social, emotional, and mental well-being. My goal this year is to make a positive impact on these aspects of my students. I plan to do this in multiple ways.

First, I am creating a calming corner in my classroom where students can have a safe and comfortable area to process and reflect on their feelings.

The items that will help my students do this are the cushions, the rug, the lava lamp, and the social-emotional books.

Another way I can help my students develop these important skills is through language arts. I have included a class set of the novel Winn Dixie to read and study together as a class because this novel teaches students how to develop empathy, work through difficult feelings, develop healthy friendships and relationships, talk about feelings, and learn to love.

Lastly, I have included watercolors and watercolor paper because practicing art and expressing feelings in ways other than talking and writing are important to the social-emotional development of individuals. I plan to implement art and painting into the SEL program we implement at our school, which is Choose Love. This program has many activities and opportunities for students to express emotions through art, and I very much would like to provide those opportunities for my students.
