Social-Emotional Tools for Primary Kids

Help me give my students the tools of literature and storytelling to manage emotions, struggles, and differences.

My Students

My Kindergarten and 1st grade students are diverse, multi-lingual, multi-cultural sponges of new knowledge. They are inquisitive and respectful. They are curious and kind.

They absolutely deserve a classroom they can be proud of and materials that are quality and reliable.

As the area is diverse, it is also a low socio-economic area where breakfast and lunch are provided daily for every student. The majority of my students are English Language Learners, meaning English is not their first language nor spoken at home.

My Project

Schools used to be places that provided the 3 Rs, but much has changed in the education realm over the last few decades. Classrooms have become places where students are fed, where they learn to make friends, and where they sometimes have to reconcile big emotions at times.

While children can be resilient, they don't always have the tools, the vocabulary, or the maturity yet to handle complex emotions.

I want to be able to expand on those teachable moments concerning social/emotional learning that are so important to a young student- while still looking like we are just having fun!

This project helps expand my classroom library to reflect not only social-emotional struggles or relatability but also to expand into a discussion of differences. Several of my students receive special needs services, so it's important that mutual respect and understanding pervade in my classroom, which also contributes to the SEL culture within our school family. It's very important that students SEE visual representations of differences in abilities and differences in feelings and experiences. This has been a challenging year. Students need the tools to face those challenges. In addition to the expansive library this project would allow, our feelings "mirrors" would be perfect in our burgeoning "calming corner". They will allow students to NAME the feelings they're feeling and experiment with calming and self-reflection techniques.
