My Project
School is one of the first places where students encounter people of different backgrounds, holding a variety of beliefs and unique abilities. This is even more true in a post-covid world where students may have lived a very limited life over the course of several years. Other traumas such as homelessness and poverty also have a negative impact on students’ confidence and social skills. Social-emotional learning has become a highly important and valuable part of school. Our children need to have their Maslow’s basic needs met (physiological needs, safety/security, love/belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization) before we can bring them to Bloom’s learning goals of remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating. Students have the opportunity to succeed when empowered with skills that directly address social and emotional learning. The goal is to help them to better understand their thoughts and emotions, to develop self-awareness, and to develop empathy for their fellow students and the world around them.
As teachers, we have many roles- educator, counselor, supporter, encourager, nurturer, and at times, stand-in parent.
In addition to the rigors of academic learning, we are also tasked with helping students to develop these qualities to make them better classroom citizens. Some students do not have positive role models at home, so it falls to teachers and school staff to provide these essential life skills.
Slumberkins are stuffed animals who come with books and SEL activities to build social skills in children. The books teach lessons on social skills and the stuffed animals make the skills come alive for children. For example, Dragon Slumberkin comes with two stories to encourage children to use their imagination and creativity to pursue their dreams and use boredom to spark innovation. These stuffed toys can be hugged by children in times of need, but are completely washable too.
