This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

One of the focuses I have been making in my teaching the past couple of years is having a space for social-emotional learning. Kids pre-COVID had difficulties seeing others’ point of view, but the added layer of struggling to physically connect with peers adds another layer to the issue. My team has done very well at making space for developing activities to promote empathy and recognizing emotions, but one thing that seems to be lacking in our social-emotional learning is giving space to self-regulate those emotions.

This is especially important as many of our students have unseen traumas.

One of the problem behaviors I encountered in particular was vandalizing supplies. Almost in every situation, when I spoke with the student, it wasn’t done out of malice. In fact, they hadn’t realized they were even doing it until they found the item in pieces in their hands.

One way to help curb these behaviors is to provide a sensory outlet (fidgets, play doh, cards, sensory beads, tape, stickers) that can help the student regulate as well as dispelling the nervous energy they may have. Sensory items cost quite a bit. Any help towards my project is greatly appreciated.
