My Students

Welcome to our room! We are self-reliant learners who, in the words of Mr. Rogers, expect and accept mistakes every day. Our class represents the diversity of the San Francisco Bay Area. Thirty percent of my students are English learners, and just under half qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Our school consists of a student population that is 20% Latino, 40% White, 15% African-American, 10% Asian, and 15% students who self-identify as multi-ethnic.

In my classroom, I make a commitment to each family that their child's needs will be meet, as an individual, to the best of my ability.

"Individualized" and "child-centered" learning have become buzzwords in education, but for me, treating each child as an individual is truly the cornerstone of my practice. I know that what happens to a child outside of my classroom is just as important and influential as what happens within it. As such, I strive to create a learning space that honors who my students are at home, in their own communities, and in the school community.

My Project

My students LOVE stuffed animals. We have a lion named Rasheed who helps us learn phonics, and a mouse named Frederick who gets to go home with a different student each week. We also have beloved characters like Elephant & Piggie and Daniel who live in our break space. Students use our shared stuffies to cuddle, play, calm down, and self-soothe.

My students' love for stuffies is why I want to provide the Kimochis program for my classroom.

Many of my students have past or ongoing experiences with trauma, and I need a coherent, research-based social emotional learning curriculum to support them. Currently, my social emotional learning curriculum is a patchwork of free resources that I've gathered up over the years. It simply isn't as effective as Kimochis, and certainly isn't as engaging. The Kimochis program helps students identify, understand and cope with complex emotions through a cast of adorable, stuffed animal characters. Each Kimochi has their own story and purpose, designed for students to see themselves in and identify with.

I know my students will love Kimochis. I have seen the program met with huge enthusiasm and joy in other classrooms. My first graders deserve the opportunity to learn how to manage their emotions and respect the emotions of others through a structured, engaging, safe curriculum. Thank you for helping to give my students the gift of Kimochis!
