This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach visual arts education to grades 6-11. Many of my students face challenges with emotional regulation, peer relationships, and self-expression that impact their learning and creative growth.I want to create an art room that is a safe space where students can explore feelings, build confidence, and develop emotional intelligence alongside artistic skills. However, I need specialized training to effectively integrate social-emotional learning (SEL) strategies into my art curriculum to truly support my students' whole-child development.

While creating art naturally involves emotional expression, I need more professional development to systematically incorporate Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) practices that could dramatically boost my students' emotional quotient (EQ).

Currently, I see students struggle with managing frustration when their art projects don’t meet their expectations, communicating their feelings about their creative work, and navigating collaborative projects that require empathy and problem-solving skills. Additionally, many students have not yet learned to use art as a healthy coping mechanism for stress and anxiety. With the right training, I believe I can more effectively support their emotional growth through the creative process.

This professional development project will provide me with comprehensive training to transform our art room. Training components include evidence-based strategies for incorporating SEL into art lessons, techniques for using art-making as emotional regulation practice, methods for facilitating meaningful reflection and dialogue about feelings through art, trauma-informed art teaching practices, and building classroom community through collaborative art projects.

The Impact on my students will benefit them by providing them with the opportunity to learn healthy ways to express and process emotions through art, develop vocabulary to discuss feelings and creative choices, build confidence in both artistic abilities and emotional self-awareness and improved peer relationships through empathy-building art .This training will help me build a more positive classroom environment for students to create in.
