Help me give my students a social-emotional learning nook. The comfy couch will provide a calm, nurturing space where they can take a break during challenging times and the mobile storage will hold books and helpful sensory objects.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am reaching out on behalf of our amazing group of kindergarten students, many of whom are English as a New Language (ENL) learners, students with special needs (SW), or come from low-income families. These children are bright, eager to learn, and full of potential—but they also face unique challenges that require additional support. Many of our students have diverse sensory and social-emotional needs, especially those who were born during the COVID-19 pandemic and are still learning how to navigate the world around them.
Students will be able to calm down during challenging times in a new social-emotional learning (SEL) nook in our classroom—a calm, nurturing space where students can practice self regulation, build social skills, and feel safe and supported.
The 5 compartment Mobile Storage Cabinet will hold books and sensory objects. These tools help young learners better understand and express their feelings, build empathy and develop self-regulation skills. The sensory objects offer kids visual and physical outlets to manage anxiety, focus their energy, and feel more secure. Unfortunately, the current setup includes two small couches that we’ve been using for the past nine years, and they no longer meet our students’ needs. We are also in need of wiggly stools for movement, sensory tools, and cozy seating to help make this space welcoming and effective for all learners.
