Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year I am one of the teachers in our Universal Transitional Kindergarten Collaborative Classroom. This means we have students in General Ed and SpED in our classroom, with a General Ed teacher & SpED teacher working in collaboration to support all students. Our students are kind, curious, and cheerful learners!

We know social emotional skills help improve academics, create positive classroom climates, and help students successfully manage everyday life.

In addition, social emotional skills help students better comprehend their emotions & demonstrate empathy for others. One of our goals is to support students social emotionally.

Currently we have a calm down area in our classroom, to give all our students a space to be aware of their feelings, and learn how to cope with strong feelings. Some of the items from this project can extend and help our calm down area. Our students would benefit from the feelings dolls because they can use them to express what they are feeling in the moment and have something to hold. The Mindful Breathing Board can be something they use to calm those strong feelings. The mirrors can help students see their feelings and we can practice making the different expressions that represent each feeling. The timers can help with calm down breaks and also be used during lessons before transitions. As an extension to support our students social emotionally we can use the feelings stamps to create artwork about feelings. We can have conversations about feelings by using the Learning to Get Along books. Play dough & kinetic sand will support our sensory learners. We can use the emotions mats to practice talking and learning about different types of feelings, using play dough to show the expressions on the faces on the mat.
