My Project
I am a speech-language pathologist that works to support adolescent students identified with learning disabilities. I specifically work to support Autistic adolescent students. These students had a particularly difficult time accessing both their general education and specialized instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, they were not as easily able to connect with peers for social connection and social emotional learning opportunities.
The items I requested will be used to teach emotions and emotional regulation through literacy, connect through play, and take the necessary sensory breaks during our sessions.
The books requested are all picture books which I will use to help my students connect with the characters. We will learn new emotions words and discuss how the characters navigated their emotions. We will then apply the characters stories to our own lives and discuss times we experienced those specific emotions. Not only will this support my learners social emotional learning, but also their narrative language skills. You will find several play-based items on my list as well. I am a firm believer that we learn when we feel safe and connected. I will use these items to build connections between my students and to incorporate sensory breaks within my sessions. These strategies will ensure my learners are regulated and ready to learn and access their education!
