My Students

I work with early-elementary students with special needs. Primarily, the population I work with is comprised of students diagnosed with "severe," nonverbal, Autism Spectrum Disorder who are working on life skills (toileting, communication, social skills, early academic concepts, dressing, etc.).

I have been working with Special Needs students since 2013 and I can't imagine doing anything else---this career is truly my life's passion.

Because my students are considered high-risk in terms of skill loss and regression; mental, emotional, and physical health challenges during both in-person and remote-learning during COVID-19, this situation truly is lose-lose for everyone involved. With your help, I am hoping to make the possibility of my district's reopening this fall as much of a success as possible. Thank you for reading and your consideration to my project!

My Project

Social-emotional learning has always been a skill set I've felt holds crucial importance. Working with young children, I feel so fortunate for the opportunity to help students learn and build upon skills they will use for the rest of their lives.

With all of the uncertainty and stress the pandemic and remote learning have brought, I've been working hard to find creative and engaging ways to help my students navigate the necessary social emotional skills to self-advocate, manage stress, and express their needs.

I work to target these skills in two ways: during a problem situation, and through games, role-play, and practice during work times. When a student is having a tough time, I work on prompting functional communication to help students self-advocate: signing, vocalizing, or using picture icons to express "more," "all done," "I want break;" provide options and guidance to support de-escalation, and model appropriate skills.

Outside of problem situations, I work on creating programs for students to practice these skills while still having fun. We work on differentiating "big" and "small" problems (ex: someone cutting you in line vs. someone hurting your body); identifying feelings, practicing coping skills (taking deep breaths, going for a walk, talking to an adult), and utilizing songs and books that tackle big feelings.

With these resources students can see what "sad" looks like with a photo or building it with emotiblocks. They can practice matching problems and their solutions with matching sequence cards, play games, roleplay, and have fun - all while learning! With these resources, I can teach valuable skills in a variety of ways, allowing individuality to student's preferred learning styles. I am looking forward to keeping instruction fresh and engaging while finding more concrete ways to teach topics that are generally really hard to grasp. Thanks for reading!
