My Project
The training/professional development through Breathe for Change will help to bring more mindfulness, SEL and mental health awareness to high school students. I currently bring lessons in mindfulness to our students in courses such as English, Academic Support, activities and clubs (Poetry club, Teen Advisory Board) and in the inquiry research process.
Students will benefit from this through the ongoing lessons that focus on using mindfulness in a variety of ways, such as mindfully doing homework, mindful reading, and mindful focus.
As a school librarian, I have the privilege to view the culture of our school through a wide view lens. This lens allows me to reflect on the best way to fill the gaps in equity and inclusion as it relates to our students mental health and social-emotional learning. Many of the lessons are interactive and include ways to tranfer to life skills.
Over the past several years I have implemented innovative ways to implement SEL into my high school library while also sharing my ideas and successes with the wider library community. In 2016, I was awarded a federal LSTA grant to collaborate with other educators and town entities to provide education and to destigmatize mental health. The grant included literature, art and mindfulness to create space for our students to become aware of intentional self care and the culture of community in regards to mental wellness.
