Social-Emotional Growth with Characters Just Like Us!

Help me give my students books with interesting and relatable characters who look, think and feel a variety of feelings, just like my students do, to support social-emotional connections, conversation and growth!

My Students

My students are curious, creative, enthusiastic movers and shakers who are interested in and excited to learn about the many wonders in the world around them. As one of a handful of alternative schools in our large urban district, our school is often sought out by families who are looking for a different approach to learning for their students. Our students often "think outside the box" and don't often fit the typical "color within the lines" student profile.

They are active learners who are vocal and kinesthetic, kind and inquisitive; who like to talk, share and move in our warm school community; and who love to learn in a hands-on way, by doing.

In our classroom, we work intentionally to be inclusive and welcoming of all members of our community and all the people we meet, and integrate social-emotional learning along with our academic learning every day!

Our school uses a yearlong, project-based approach to learning called "expeditionary learning" which encompasses academically rigorous learning in a specific topic area in a hands-on, project-based and integrated way. Students find this approach to learning highly engaging and enjoyable; they truly have a zest for learning and give their efforts 110%!

My Project

In this unusual year of remote learning and much more limited social interaction, my young students need to continue to grow their social-emotional understanding and connect with each other, even if virtually. Due to the current circumstances, which are beyond any of our control, we are all experiencing a wide range of emotions. Students need to know that they will be valued, supported and loved, no matter what they are feeling.

My students love stories and books, and this collection will provide a wide range of characters who experience a variety of feelings, just like my first grade students.

I hope to help them grow their social-emotional vocabulary, understandings and connections; promote conversations in our class community and at home with their families,; and foster continuing growth in their overall social-emotional literacy.

Your support of this project helps some of the youngest learners to grow their emotional intelligence at a foundational level while they are quite young...what a gift to them and to our wider world!
