This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It is my third year working as the school psychologist at my elementary school and I have developed some good working relationships with my students. A majority of my students are English Language Learners and from a low SES community. Most of the students that I work with receive special education services under eligibilities of Other Health Impairment, Autism and specific learning disability. I provide DIS counseling to multiple students and we mainly focus on coping skills, social skills, self-awareness, self-esteem, effective communication, frustration tolerance, etc. Most importantly, I try to create a therapeutic environment where my students feel safe and comfortable to share their feelings and talk candidly about their life experiences.

It is incredible how strong and resilient my students are despite the challenges that they face.

My students are a fun bunch! I not only want them to be comfortable and have fun in counseling, I also want them to learn the appropriate skills necessary to successfully navigate through elementary school, middle school, high school and beyond. My ultimate goal for my students is to be happy and kind to others.

My Project

This project is important for my students' social-emotional learning as it will couple their love for games and their need to grow socially, emotionally and behaviorally. With the 'My Feelings Game', 'Feelmo', etc., my students can learn more about labeling and identifying their feelings. If they happen to be angry, the Mad Dragon game can help them with utilizing positive ways to handle their emotions. Additionally, games with CBT can be a useful material that ties all aspects of their feelings and thoughts together in a way to help them with various coping skills, appropriate social skills and self-control to help them make better behavioral choices.

Games are a great way for children to learn and internalize important social and emotional life skills.

I believe these games could help enhance my students' understanding and memory of the skills that they are lacking, such as various coping skills, how to control their anger, labeling and understanding their emotions, etc. I am excited for this project to be funded because I know my students will benefit from these games.
