These supplies will help students learn essential skills needed to identify and regulate their emotions and sensory systems. Students are best equipped to learn when they are in a regulated state. Sensory tools help students to calm when they feel overwhelmed by providing different forms of sensory input. Learning how to regulate one's emotions and sensory needs helps students to increase their independence in becoming independent learners and problem-solvers. Weighted items are especially helpful for times when students feel restless or may have difficulty sitting still (i.e. circle time, independent work time). They can help increase attention and concentration. Fidgets are another great tool for increasing attention, especially for students with disabilities like autism or ADHD.
With increased social/emotional and sensory regulation skills, students are better equipped to actively participate in their learning.
It also improves their ability to form strong and healthy interpersonal relationships with others! The pandemic has negatively impacted students' abilities to learn and practice these essential skills.
