Social Distancing Can Be Fun!

Help me give my students their own lap desks to work comfortably at acceptable distances from one another, a stylus to help while learning handwriting digitally, and cute fanny packs to make individual supply storage convenient and fun!

My Students

My classroom is not one where students sit at desks in neat rows, keeping quiet and facing forward. At least, I don't want it to be that way. I like to give my students as much freedom and choice as possible while staying within our school and social expectations. "Organized chaos" is my favorite way to describe my classroom, and watching my first graders become independent little people is the best part of my job.

My students love to learn, create, chat, and move...often all at the same time!

They use technology in new and innovative ways and they work through problems together.

My Project

Last year, your generosity helped me turn my classroom into a cozy, welcoming, and flexible learning environment for my first graders. This year, I'm asking for your help again. We no longer have the freedom to sit together at our group tables or share seats and materials like we used to. However, I've decided to try and make the most of these circumstances! Last year's project helped fund four individual lap desks for my classroom, which were a huge hit for the kids! The lap desks were especially useful when we did our online assessments, as a few students could move them around the room, find a quiet learning space, and prop up their iPad to work. I kept thinking to myself, if only I had more of these!

Since I no longer have traditional desks for each student, it would be wonderful to provide each child with his or her own lap desk to reduce the spread of germs and for working in a designated space at an appropriate distance from others!

When the work is done, we can wipe them down and store them away (something you can't do with regular desks) then use the open classroom space for a brain break like a dance party or yoga video! In addition, the styluses would help our little ones who are still learning how to write letters and properly hold a pencil, as most of our work will be done digitally on their devices this year. Finally, the fanny packs will help us significantly cut down on cross-contamination (and losing pencils!) as we can no longer share supplies. The packs are easily cleaned, durable, and brightly colored.

My hope is that this project will help make this whole situation a little more fun and a little less scary!
