Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) Magnet school with a diverse population that reflects Los Angeles County. Half of my students ride the bus in from various parts of Los Angeles County. Most of our school receive free or reduced-price lunch.

My students are motivated and diligent students.

I not only have an ethnically diverse class, but I also have a class with varying academic abilities. I have students who have been identified with special needs as well as students who demonstrate strong academic capabilities. My students come with a keen interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Our school's goal is to prepare every child to be college and career ready, especially in the areas of STEAM.

My Project

I am asking for books focusing on Social and Emotional Learning to build our emotional intelligence and to foster a sense of wellbeing in our classroom. The books have been carefully chosen because they convey important themes and lessons while using kid-friendly language and engaging, beautiful illustrations.

Now that we are in distance learning, the need to connect with my students socially and emotionally is paramount and evident as we strive to build a community of learners that are empathetic and kind to others and themselves.

I know these books will impact our class in positive ways, such as engaging students, driving meaningful discussions, and instilling the importance of growing their capacity for empathy and kindness.
