My Students
My students are learning more and more each day about new ideas, concepts, themes and realities that are connecting them to their culture, community, and other histories. They need creative outlets to express what they've learned.
My students come from communities with a rich cultural, ethnic, and social histories.
They are creative, innovative, and determined students to develop new ways of understanding their realities. They engage in critical discussions in my class, despite being only freshmen and they push their comfort levels and vulnerability. With these amazing students I hope to give them more tools to continue their growth.
My Project
The button maker and block printing supplies will be used for students to create buttons and art to bring awareness about the issues they are facing in their schools and in their communities. The culmination of a series of lessons around sexism, racism, and colonization will have students creating their own block printing and buttons to share with family, friends, and community members.
My students are impacted every day by negative images and narratives about them and their communities.
These tools will be used to connect students to others as well as connect their creativity to their passion. Ultimately, my students will leave with art and buttons that can help them practice self-love and challenge systems of domination and oppression.
