Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a low-income/high poverty school located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Against all odds, our students are bright-eyed, gung-ho, innovators that continuously create powerful products. No more is this present, than in our Tech Café.

Here, 5th-8th graders use low- and high-tech tools to create social action products.

Examples include a cigarette smoke detecting shirt, handcrafted wallets and rings for the homeless, Stationery kits from discarded paper, and a hip hop song about body-image. When you visit (please do!), you'll sense the buzz in the air as students excitedly and independently apply their creative minds.

My Project

Over the last month, I have provided students in our Makerspace with the tools and materials to make powerful social action T-shirts to wear and give away. Through research, they have become knowledgeable and passionate about a variety of issues. Many created fantastic T-shirts that reflected their new understandings. Examples can be found on our Twitter page twitter.com/TheTechbrarian and include:

* boxing gloves and the cancer symbol with the message: MY ____ IS WORTH FIGHTING FOR (wearers fill in the blank)

*LGBTQ symbols with the message: LET ME BE ME!

*A scar with the message: CHILD ABUSE IS A SCAR THAT NEVER HEALS, PARENTS: BE GENTLE

*A gun with a slash through it and the message: MIDDLE SCHOOL=TEMPORARY SUICIDE = PERMANENT

Obviously, these are intense and heartfelt messages that are unique to these students and can only be created with select materials. To continue our work, we need more supplies. Your help would be HUGELY appreciated :)
