My Students
Mia Hamm stated, "I am a member of a team, and I rely on the team, I defer to it and sacrifice for it, because the team, not the individual, is the ultimate champion!" Her quote embodies the mission of our program. I want to make sure my athletes learn the power of working for others.
Our public high school serves approximately 1700 students from a large military community.
The student body represents a variety of cultural backgrounds and experiences. Many of our students come from economically disadvantaged homes and will change schools several times before completing high school. However, some of these students find a sense of purpose and belonging on sport teams. We are more than just a team trying to get be better, but we are a family.
My Project
Gaining a scholarship to play soccer at the collegian level can be very difficult. As you can imagine the budget for collegian soccer coaches are very limited. This makes it difficult for them to travel and watch prospective soccer players. They also prefer to go to club tournaments where they can see a variety of players at one time instead of a local high school game. Unfortunately for my players this is even more difficult because our community doesn't have a solid club soccer program.
As their coach, I want to give my athletes every opportunity to get to the collegian soccer level, and highlight videos are one way to help.
We currently don't have the ability to record every match we play because a video camera has to be shared with other sports program at the school. Having a camera of our own will allow every game to be recorded and used to teach and create highlight videos. I have many athletes who are skilled enough to play collegian soccer, but they are falling between the cracks due to lack of exposure.
