This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students have come to New York City from all over the world to make better lives for themselves. They attend school full of energy and spirit, and they are ready to learn and contribute to this city and country. Outside of school they are in need of resources and activities so that they can stay connected, stay busy and stay healthy.

I want to provide these boys and girls with soccer balls and basketballs so that they can get out of their shelters and play when they are not in school.

Our new students traveled great distances, through jungles and over mountains, with only the clothes on their backs. They now live in shelters where they spend most of their time watching TV, not because they want to but because they don't have the basic tools for hobbies and sports that many of us take for granted.

Providing basic sports equipment to these students would provide them with an opportunity to get outside and play, have fun, and be reminded that they are kids, even if they are experiencing something more difficult than many people face in their entire lives.
