I am lucky enough to work with an amazing group of middle school students in a Title 1 school. Over 99% of our students fall below the poverty line and receive free lunch. Our students come from a community stricken with poverty, a high crime rate and a history of low academic achievement.
Our students work hard to overcome many educational, social and personal challenges daily.
Despite their challenges, they come to school motivated and enthusiastic about learning every day. The staff at my school have been working endlessly in preparation for this school year to improve our school's climate and culture. We strive to make Harding a community-based school where active learning can be a main focus.
Beyond academic instruction, our students require direct, explicit instruction on positive behavior as well. In order to develop a school culture that recognizes and rewards positive behavior, we developed the SOAR system for students who are Safe, On task, Accountable and Reflective. Through this initiative, students earn Scholar Dollars when they exhibit these expectations throughout the school. Earning the Scholar Dollars have taught our students successful school habits that have translated to successful habits in all of their affairs.
Throughout the school year, we hold a monthly school store and other events such as dances, movie days and sport tournaments that the students can participate in by using their Scholar Dollars. Being a Title 1 school we have a limited budget to support these activities. This project would help us continue to stock our store with the in demand items our students love to purchase with their Scholar Dollars. At our school our Hawks SOAR above the rest!
