Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Urban environment. Low socioeconomic status. Bad. These are all words I hear the media and teachers at different schools say about my students. However, I get to see these 500+ people everyday, and they paint me a wonderful portrait of laughter, friendship, honesty, and family each week.

Family is the best way to describe my students.

Most of them live within a block or two of each other and have been going to school in the same building for years. Older sisters drop off their younger brothers before walking to class. Sets of concerned girls make sure their friend is okay after a classmate said something mean. Flocks of teenagers cause fun mischief and look around for another group's approval. It is so rewarding to be in a building where the students truly care about each other. Where they know they have someone looking out for them. Where they know they are loved. I could go on and on about how much my students have taught me about the meaning of the word 'family,' and I hope I've been able to return the gift of knowledge and insight in my classroom.

My Project

My students' music education will completely change with these instruments. They are adjusted to the instruments they have had for the past twelve years, and they deserve something new. Something fresh. Something that is theirs to be proud of. It is time for a new challenge.

Orff instruments are a fantastic way for my students to see the "full picture" of what music has to offer: great sounds, practical theory, and a path to excellence.

The instruments from this project will be used daily at the elementary level to teach music curriculum; they will also be used for middle school composition work.
