Soaring Through Science with STEM

My Students

Remember those magic shows that make you wonder? That's how I want to make my students feel. Science is magic, or is it? Learning the mystery behind the magic is exciting.

My students are excited to learn but have few resources to do so.

They are curious about science and how things work. STEM is a great goal but hard to reach without resources. Many of my students have never seen, let alone understood, how heat changes metals. I want my students to explore their questions and examine their answers. Sitting and listening to the teacher tell how something works is so boring, watching how something works is better. Being able to do an experiment and have your own experience is fantastic! We want to see rockets soar testing different fin configurations. We want to watch all the colors in the spectrum turn white. We want to see not hear how weight positioning effect how a car drives. We want to live science.

My Project

My students need rocket engines, thermal conductivity bars, and cars to experience science in a hands on fashion. The culmination of our sixth grade year, after learning STEM topics, is to build rockets. We use construction paper and supplies easily found in a school. We are missing the rocket engines, these really help students see the effect of their fin designs. Rockets send our students off to junior high with a blast of confidence. Demonstrating a trebuchet and watching the effects as changes are made make science fair much easier. Which is the independent and dependent variable? What changes can I make to my mousetrap car to make it go faster and farther? I want to teach through experience rather than telling and reading. I want to make science come to life.

Donations to this classroom project will make a world of difference!

Students will gain more confidence and a much greater understanding of science and STEM topics. Watching kids become seriously engaged and curious is magic for all. This could easily change the direction of a child's future from a job to a STEM profession!
