My Project
SOAR is a program that helps students who struggle with social, emotional, and behavioral difficulties find success in school. The program uses a small teacher-to-student ratio, frequent sessions/lessons with our social worker, supported push-in time, and pull-out time to support students' academic, social, and behavioral growth. A pillar of the program is our token economy system. Students earn points throughout the school day for making positive choices during challenging moments. These points are used to earn incentives such as raffle prizes (such as Lego sets and emotional comfort toys like stuffed animals), experiences (like crafting projects or movies), and opting for flexible/comfortable seating (like in an armchair or bean bag). These extrinsic rewards are tethered to intrinsic motivation during group discussions and social work time, helping students internalize their accomplishments as they work towards developing social and emotional skills needed to be successful academically and behaviorally. The majority of these prizes and experiences are funded by the program staff. The items being requested will help to rejuvenate our selection of program incentives while taking the financial burden off the staff who run it.
