Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I school in southern California. Most of my students come from low-income families, and many do not stay at the same school for more than a year. These students are shuffled from one school to the next due to overflow and bus restrictions. This contributes to an unbalanced education. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about those circumstances.
However, I can give these young learners a thirst for knowledge and the ability to use logic and communication to find information for themselves.
This is the first year we are teaching at a distance. This is going to be equally challenging for teachers, parents, and students. Our students are in first grade and have not had experience with technology and need a tremendous amount of support. Thank you for your help in making this transition as smooth as possible.
My Project
Our students have all started behind this year thanks to COVID. My district was hit especially hard and didn't return to campus until April.
Most students are still far behind grade level and are in danger of never catching up.
Many of our students do not have books at home. They rely heavily on the public library, which is no longer available to them. Their school-issued iPads will be turned in at the end of the year, limiting their personal libraries even further.
My goal is to make sure that every student gets to take home at least 2 books to continue reading over the summer. One will be on their level now and one to help them grow as readers. It would easy to give them my old classroom library books, but I'd rather give them texts that they actually WANT to read. There is such a great selection these days that every child should be able to find something that sparks their interest - superheroes, classics, popular characters, and many more!
